Flat White does one thing. It introduces you to one person in your city — for curiosity, friendship, networking, or dating — and books you a table for an hour. No swiping, no messaging, no group events with name tags. The conversation starts in person, over coffee, because that’s where it was always going to end up anyway.
If you’ve read our Notes, you know the argument: the swipe era is winding down, loneliness is quietly common, and the answer to both is smaller and older than an app store suggests — two people, a table, an hour. We built Flat White because we think that hour is the most underrated piece of social infrastructure in the country.
A small Perth team
Flat White is built by Apps People, a small software company in Perth founded by Stuart Kidd. We are not a venture-fuelled growth machine with an engagement dashboard. We’re a handful of people who build useful things for the places and people around us, and who’d rather an app ended with two people putting their phones away than picking them up.
That shapes the product more than any feature list. Flat White is designed to be finished with quickly: you tell it who you’d like to meet, it finds the person and the café, and then its job is done — the rest happens at the table.
Cafés are the other half of the story
This isn’t our first product built around cafés. We also make Foody Bag, a food-rescue app where cafés, bakeries and grocers sell their end-of-day surplus as discounted mystery bags instead of binning it. Tens of thousands of bags have been rescued across Perth, and it taught us something we haven’t forgotten: the corner café is one of the last genuinely local institutions — and it’s doing it tough, with costs up and quiet weekday tables.
So the two products are really one idea seen from both ends of the day. Foody Bag looks after closing time, making sure good food finds a home instead of a bin. Flat White looks after opening hours, putting people at those quiet tables — every meeting we arrange is a booking at a local café, not a video call or a bar tab. Where this is going
The plan is deliberately city-by-city. Perth first, because it’s home and because Perth needs this more than most places. Then the rest of Australia, one city at a time, each with its own waitlist and its own cafés. Then abroad — there are lonely cities and good cafés everywhere.
